What is changing?
Avanan is retiring their basic "Protect" package because it no longer includes key advanced features like zero-day defence, sandboxing and threat-extraction. The lowest tier available is now Advanced Email and Advance Email + Collaboration.
This upgrade ensures your clients stays protected against evolving threats and your risk of a breach is minimised.
The Email Protect and Email & Collaboration Protect SKUs will be discontinued and decommissioned on 1 December, 2025.
Impacted SKUs:
| Name | SKU | Description |
| MPmail Email Protect | MPAVEOP | Email only - Spam protection from advanced phishing, malicious links and files. |
| MPmail Email & Collaboration Protect | MPAVAAP | Anti-phishing, URL click protection, global mailbox search & destroy, policy enforcement and advanced security reporting. |
Why is this happening?
The Protect SKU is no longer a viable option given the advanced attacks we are seeing. Zero-day protection, sandboxing and full threat extraction from attachments are essential for effective client protection.
What do I need to do?
No migration is required and your portal access will not change. You can proactively update your SKU or it will automatically be upgraded on the 1st.
What will be the impact on pricing?
As the lowest cost option is no longer available, there will be an increase in cost as clients transition to the next level up. Customers with Email and Collaboration Protect can move to Email Only Advanced to negate the increase. This change must be made manually in the portal.
If a customer has Email Only Protect they will be moved to Email Only Advanced which will incur an unavoidable price increase.
What will be the customer experience?
Some clients may experience a change in how their email protection works. These are some reported impacts to be aware of:
Email Handling
- Emails may be delayed slightly more often due to deeper inline scanning and sandboxing.
- Fewer suspicious emails will reach inboxes, so users may see less need to report phishing.
Quarantine
- Quarantine notifications and portals may look different or show more detailed threat reasons.
- Users might see additional categories for blocked items (eg “Advanced Threat” instead of just “Malware”).
Link Behaviour
- When clicking links in emails, users may notice redirects or brief checks before opening (click-time protection).
- Some links may open in a safe preview mode first.
File Access
- Attachments could open in a sanitised version (e.g., stripped macros) without warning.
- Larger or unusual files might take longer to download due to advanced scanning.
Notifications
- Users may receive more frequent security alerts or informational banners explaining blocked content.
- Language in alerts may reference “Advanced Protection” or “Sandbox” instead of generic terms.
Collaboration Apps
- If coverage expands to Teams, SharePoint, OneDrive, etc., users might see blocked file messages in those apps where previously they didn’t.
In conclusion
We know it’s never easy to pass on cost increases, but Avanan have not changed their prices in four years. This message might help your customers understand.
“We need to upgrade to a better email protection plan because the basic one no longer provides the level of safety you need. This new plan will ensure you’re properly protected from new and evolving email threats, helping keep your staff, data, and systems safer every day.”
